Volkswagen Ireland tells us that the 2015 Volkswagen Golf R model gets a €9,550 price reduction over the current model, at just €42,445.
And in addition, it also gets increased specification to the value of €2,280. Standard equipment highlights include Bi-Xenon headlights, Adaptive Cruise Control, ‘Climatronic’ 2-Zone air conditioning and Park Distance Control.
There are four variants of the Golf R available in the new 2015 line-up with a choice of either 3- or 5-doors fitted with either a six-speed manual gearbox or six-speed DSG gearbox.
The R is the most powerful production Golf, putting out 300 PS, thanks to a four-cylinder 2.0-litre turbocharged TSI petrol engine. Employing the same engine as the Golf GTI, in the R the engine has a modified cylinder head, exhaust valves, valve seats and springs, pistons, injection valves and turbocharger.
0-100km/h takes just 5.1 seconds or even quicker at 4.9 seconds when the DSG gearbox is fitted.
All R models come with the fifth-generation Haldex 4MOTION four-wheel drive system which uses the front axle only under low loads or when coasting to help with fuel consumption, but the rear axle can be engaged in seconds whereby almost 100 per cent of power can be transferred to the rear axle.
Visually the R features large air inlets, a modified radiator grille with ‘R’ logo and daytime running lights, bespoke body colour sills, and matt chrome-capped door mirrors. The car features 19” Cadiz alloy wheels as standard.
“The new price point for Golf R brings it more in line with the rest of our performance Golf range,” said a Volkswagen Ireland spokesman. “There is now just a €1,780 price walk from our most expensive GTI to the entry-level R model which is going to give performance car customers something to think about.”
The four versions of the 2015 Golf R 2.0 TFSI model is available to order now: the 3-door, with manual 6-speed, 165g/km (Band D) – €42,445; 3-door, with DSG 6-speed, 159g/km (Band D) – €44,260; 5-door, with manual 6-speed, 165g/km (Band D) – €43,465; and the 5-door, with DSG 6-speed, 159g/km (Band D) – €45,280.
