VWGI boss offers apology

The Managing Director of Volkswagen Group Ireland has appeared before the Joint Committee on Transport and Communications, and apologised to Irish car owners over the emissions testing software scandal in diesel engines.

Lars Himmer addressed the Joint Committee on Transport and Communications this week and explained as many as 80,000 vehicles sold by the company and a further 30,000 imported vehicles may be affected by the manipulation of coding software.

The emissions issue relates to vehicles registered between 2008 and 2015 and containing a type EA189 engine.
Mr Himmer said the affected cars are technically safe and roadworthy and there was no impact on handling or consumption.

He said Volkswagen would fix the mistakes and recognised it needed to learn lessons from the mistakes made.
