The new Opel Grandland, which arrives at dealer showrooms in Ireland in the coming weeks, retailing from €40,995 plus delivery, is already celebrating its first major success, winning the 2024 Golden Steering Wheel in Germany.
The new SUV presented strong arguments to see the experts name the newcomer the ‘Best car up to €50,000’. The award, presented by Auto Bild and Bild am Sonntag is recognised as one of the most renowned of its kind in the automotive industry. This year’s award for the new Grandland takes Opel’s ‘Golden Steering Wheel’ title tally to a total of 21 since 1978.
That year, the brand won its first ‘Golden Steering Wheel’ with the Opel Senator. Fast forward to 2020 and the Opel Corsa-e won, followed by the Opel Mokka in 2021, and the Opel Astra in 2022.
“The new Opel Grandland is already bringing the automotive future to the road. It is the first Opel on a BEV-native platform. This enables exemplary locally emissions-free ranges combined with excellent comfort. This blend combined with the bold and pure Opel design is exceptional,” said Opel CEO, Florian Huettl.
“The Opel Grandland convinces with its distinctive design and modern cockpit. And it shows how important it is today to give customers freedom when choosing their drive. Whether hybrid, plug-in hybrid or fully electric, everyone will find the right variant,” said Robin Hornig, editor-in-chief of Auto Bild.

The new Opel Grandland Hybrid SC level one trim will retail in Ireland from €40,995 plus delivery. The Grandland Electric arrives soon after and pricing will be announced in the coming weeks.
The first Opel from the new STLA Medium platform, the new Grandland will first launch in Ireland with the Hybrid powertrain. It comes with a 1.2-litre turbo petrol engine with 100 kW (136 hp) as well as 21 kW (28 hp) electric motor and electrified six-speed dual clutch transmission. Opel claims the new technology enables fully electric travel up to 50 per cent of the time in urban settings.
The Hybrid powertrain will be quickly followed by an all-electric 73kWh version (523km range/160kW DC charging), with an 82kWh (582km/150kW DC charging) European battery cell, made in Douvrin in France, to follow. In 2025, a 97kWh battery offering up to 700km range, will be introduced.
According to Opel, its new SUV is longer, wider and features larger wheels than the outgoing Grandland. It’s 4,650mm long (+173mm), 1,934mm wide (+49mm) and 1,665mm high (+36mm), with 20mm more legroom in the rear and up to 1,645 litres load volume in the boot and 36-litres of cabin storage.
Combined with its 19-inch alloy wheels and sporting a two-toned floating roof (GS trim), contrast cladding, and sharp wheel-arch lines, it sits at the top of Opel’s SUV portfolio.
On the outside, a new 3D front Vizor with illuminated Blitz logo sits at the centre front, standard on the level three GS trim. New illuminated OPEL lettering at the rear, first seen on the Opel Experimental concept car revealed in 2023, is standard across all three trims. The new Grandland is also the first Opel with the brand’s new glare-free Intelli-Lux HD light technology, featuring more than 50,000 lighting elements, and standard on GS trims.
Inside the cockpit, there’s a 10- or 16-inch multi-media central display, trim dependent, combined with a high centre console, while behind the steering wheel lies a fully digital driver cluster. Drivers also have the option of triggering the Pure Mode to reduce content on the driver displays to ensure even less distraction. In typical Opel tradition, frequently used settings such as climate control can also be operated intuitively via a few remaining buttons.
A choice of six colours is on offer, to include new ‘Impakt Copper’ and ‘Spektrum Green’ options, whilst three trims make up the range: SC, Elegance, and GS.
The level one Grandland Hybrid SC trim retails from €40,995 plus delivery and boasts as standard, the new illuminated OPEL rear logo, adaptive cruise control, a 10-inch infotainment Pure Panel multi-media screen with phone projection, a 10-inch driver information cluster, 19-inch alloy wheels, front and rear parking sensors, power folding mirrors, smart key with passive entry and start, auto high beam LED lights.
