EU wants quieter cars

The European Parliament has floated a proposal which would result in quieter cars and a reduction in traffic noise in the future.

The proposal sets new limits to the noise vehicles can emit and would be phased in over a six to eight year period. The proposal includes plans for hybrid and electric vehicles to be fitted with noise generators, in order to warn pedestrians of their approach.

“Persistent exposure to high levels of traffic noise can prove physically draining, disrupt organ functions and contribute to cardiovascular and other diseases,” the European parliament said in a statement.
