Last summer, Mitsubishi Motors Europe (MME) announced a full withdrawal from Europe.
It recently partially reversed that decision, after its alliance partner Renault agreed to build two new ‘sister’ models to sell in some European markets.
The UK and Ireland will not be included in those markets continuing with the brand.
However, the brand will remain in other large volume markets including Germany, France, Spain and Italy, as part of its plans to reverse losses at MME.
The new Eclipse Cross compact plug-in hybrid SUV will largely hold the fort until alliance partner Renault delivers two new sister models in 2023.
It is smaller in size than the Outlander – its best selling plug-in hybrid SUV in Europe, which Mitsubishi has already confirmed that it will not be offering a replacement for.
The smaller ASX SUV will also be discontinued when existing stocks are sold.
However, the Space Star compact car and the L200 pick-up will be offered in the bigger European markets it has chosen to stay in.
The two new models based on already popular Renault top-sellers in Europe and also existing fully approved vehicles in the EU, will be either hybrid or more likely all-electric, when they are launched in 2023.
Speculation is that these may be sister-versions of the Captur compact SUV and possibly the Clio supermini.
