Paul BurkeIn a market which is down 7 per cent compared to 2012, sales in September were 28 per cent up on September 2012, a continued sign of the success of the new registration system.

The BMW 5 Series was the top selling model in September with 223 units, followed by the Volkswagen Golf on 125 units and the SEAT Leon with 89 units.

Volkswagen is the top selling brand year to date with a market share of 12.67 per cent market share, followed by Toyota with 10.4 per cent and Ford on 10.23 per cent market share.

Commenting on the figures and speaking at the Volkswagen Dealer Conference which is taking place in Lyrath Estate Hotel in Kilkenny, Volkswagen Operations Director Paul Burke said that signs were promising for a strong finish to 2013.

“Sales of the Golf, which has been awarded both World and European Car of the Year have been very strong this year and with new variants of the car coming in 2014 we are optimistic for the year ahead,”

“All hopes are on the proposed Swappage programme for 2014 which we think is key to the continued success of the market in 2014, which will not only be a boost to our industry but will greatly increase customer sentiment as well as boost the government coffers. So it really is a win-win scenario for Ireland.”
