There is a lie everyone tells you about the Monaco Historique. They say it is a parade. They say it is just a moving museum for billionaires to show off their toys. I spent four days pressed up against the armco last weekend with a camera in my hand and grit in my teeth, and I can tell you: it is the single most violent, glorious motor race left on the planet.
I arrived at mid morning on Thursday, before the yachts had woken up and before the crowds had arrived to fill the streets. The air was cool, smelling of 110-octane fuel, burnt castor oil, and warm croissants.
These cars are not museum pieces. They are driven with a terrifying, mechanical desperation. It was proven right in front of me as an Embassy Hill GH1 screamed down the tunnel at me, missing its front wing and its rear wing hanging off, halting right in front of me and a marshal.
I watched a black-and-gold John Player Special Lotus hunt the apex at the Swimming Pool, skimming the barrier so closely I could have reached out and touched the car.

But nothing prepares you for the tunnel.
I stood deep inside the tunnel for the Ferrari show run, and you do not simply hear those cars. You experience them. The vibration climbs through the tarmac, up through the soles of your shoes and into your bones.
When the pack enters, the noise hits the walls and bounces back so hard it physically presses against your chest, stealing the air from your lungs. Twelve V12s, one after another, howling at ten thousand RPM.
For ten seconds, you cannot breathe, you cannot think. There is only the visceral assault of light and thunder tearing out of the dark.
For most of the year, Monaco is a place of quiet elegance and modern luxury. But for this one weekend, it transforms. The legends have finally come home.
